Introducing the alphabet without worksheets

In our household, we love books (look at our book reviews ;) ), and I love introducing topics through good books first. Same with the alphabet. So, I want to share our favourite alphabet-books to get familiar with the letters. At this stage, it’s just about recognising shapes and some sounds. There is no expectation in “learning” the letters and rattling off the alphabet.

Since we want to create familiarity with the letter sounds in English, German, and Portuguese, we’re using different books per language, so the word associations match.

German Alphabet

“Buchstabenhausen” - Maja Knochenhauer, Jonas Tjäder

Wonderful illustrations for each letter of the alphabet.

English Alphabet

“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” - Bill Martin Jr., John Archambault, Lois Ehlert

Our son couldn’t stop repeating the text after reading it for one day.

Find it on Amazon

Portuguese Alphabet

“Era uma vez um alfabeto” - Oliver Jeffers

The original is in English, of course, but I love the Portuguese adaptation a lot.

Find it on Wook.

Alfabeto na caixa

Print out this Portuguese alphabet book and enjoy!

Find it in our shop.

The Fun Extra

“P Is for Pterodactyl” - Raj Haldar, Chris Carpenter, Maria Beddia

All the words that don’t work with the alphabet. Nice dive into phonics… and their exceptions.

Find it on Amazon.

I hope you enjoy all these alphabet books as much as we do!
